When Will OptiFine Update? Live Status and Release History

The status box above reads optifine.net/downloads every hour and shows the newest OptiFine build listed for each Minecraft version, marked as a full release or a preview. If the newest Minecraft release has no row, there is no OptiFine for it yet, whatever a video title says.

On 21 October 2026 the page looked like this: nothing for 26.3, which Mojang released on 15 September; three preview builds for 26.2, the newest dated 20 October; two previews for 26.1.2; and two full releases for 1.21.11, the newer dated 5 February 2026. Every 26.x preview carried 'Forge N/A' in the Forge column, meaning OptiFine's author had not marked them as working with Forge.

A preview is OptiFine's test build. It sits under a separate 'Preview versions' heading on the download page, it may have bugs or missing features, and newer previews replace older ones on the list. The page only shows the latest few builds for each version: when we compared it with the Internet Archive's copy from 4 October 2026, the first 26.2 preview, dated 22 September, had already been replaced by newer ones.

OptiFine is closed-source and made by its author, sp614x, whose GitHub account hosts the issue tracker that optifine.net links to. There is no public roadmap, which is why every 'OptiFine 26.3 release date' you see online is a guess.

Past waits are the only evidence available, so we measured them. For each Minecraft version below, we took Mojang's release date from its official version manifest and the date of the earliest full OptiFine build still listed for that version on optifine.net, then counted the days between.

The pattern is clear. Up to 1.21.4, a full release usually arrived within about two months, twice within two weeks, and only 1.20.4 took longer, at 101 days. Since then the gaps have grown and full releases have become rarer: on optifine.net's list, 1.21.6, 1.21.7, 1.21.8, 1.21.9 and 1.21.10 only ever received previews, and OptiFine's next full release went to 1.21.11 instead. Every 26.x version so far has had previews only, and 26.1 itself was skipped in favour of 26.1.2.

So when will OptiFine update for 26.3? The realistic expectation is not a date. It is that OptiFine may publish 26.3 previews at some point, may move straight on to 26.4 when that ships, and may not publish a full 26.3 release at all. If you want shaders on 26.3 now, do not wait on it.

Search results for OptiFine 26.3 are full of videos and download pages that suggest otherwise. Some show OptiFine installers for older versions, some link to repackaged files, and some are modpacks that borrow the OptiFine name. None of them can be OptiFine 26.3, because the only place OptiFine is published is optifine.net, and it lists nothing for 26.3.

Modpacks and sites called 'OptiFine for Fabric' are not made by OptiFine's author. OptiFine's own FAQ says OptiFine generally may not be included in a modpack without explicit permission, so a pack that contains real OptiFine is either licensed or breaking that rule, and packs on Modrinth under that name are bundles of other mods that imitate OptiFine's features.

That is not a reason to avoid those mods, which can be perfectly good. It is a reason not to download an 'OptiFine' jar from anywhere except optifine.net, because a file that claims to be something it is not is exactly how malware spreads.

Most people install OptiFine for two things, frame rate and shaders, and both are covered on 26.3 today. Sodium, whose author describes it as a rendering engine replacement that greatly improves frame rates and reduces micro-stutter, published full 26.3 releases for Fabric and NeoForge on 15 September 2026, the day 26.3 came out. Its newer 26.3 builds since then are marked alpha and beta. Iris, the shader loader, published a 26.3 release for Fabric the same day and for NeoForge on 30 September.

Current Iris builds list Sodium as a required dependency, so you need both jars in your mods folder. Older guides that say Iris bundles Sodium describe an earlier arrangement; on 26.3 you download them separately.

The quickest setup is Fabric: install the Fabric loader for 26.3, then put Sodium and Iris in the mods folder, picking the Fabric file of each for 26.3. Add Fabric API and Mod Menu if you want other Fabric mods and a settings screen. On NeoForge, install the NeoForge files of Sodium and Iris instead. Shader packs go in the shaderpacks folder and are switched on from Video Settings, Shader Packs.

The other OptiFine features each have a replacement. You probably used two or three of them at most, so add only what you miss.

Usually, yes. Iris describes itself as 'a modern shader pack loader for Minecraft intended to be compatible with existing OptiFine shader packs', and the shader authors agree: the five most-downloaded shader packs on Modrinth that support 26.3 are Complementary Reimagined, Complementary Unbound, BSL, Photon and Solas, and every one of them is tagged for both Iris and OptiFine.

Across Modrinth, 265 shader packs were tagged Iris for 26.3 on 21 October 2026, and 214 were tagged OptiFine. Most packs carry both tags, so do not add the numbers together; the point is that the large majority of packs already work with Iris on the version OptiFine has not reached.

A pack built purely around OptiFine-specific features can still behave differently under Iris. Check the shader pack's own page for an Iris tag, and if a resource pack looks wrong after the switch, it most likely relied on OptiFine's connected textures or custom entity models, which Continuity and Entity Model Features replace.

Play a version OptiFine has finished. On 21 October 2026, the newest Minecraft version with a full OptiFine release was 1.21.11, and optifine.net listed a matching Forge build in its Forge column, so OptiFine on 1.21.11 with Forge is an officially paired setup. 1.21.11 needs Java 21, which the official launcher installs for you.

Previews work for many people but are test builds. If you try a 26.2 preview, do it in a separate installation and on a copy of your world, and expect to replace it when the next preview appears.

To install OptiFine on its own, launch the matching vanilla version once, close the game, run the OptiFine .jar and choose Install, then pick the new OptiFine profile in the launcher. To use it with Forge on a version where optifine.net lists a Forge build, place the OptiFine jar in the mods folder of that Forge installation instead.

OptiFine does not support Fabric or NeoForge. A third-party mod called OptiFabric has been used to load OptiFine on Fabric, but it is not made by OptiFine's author and is not on Modrinth. If you are already on Fabric, Sodium and Iris do the same jobs without a compatibility layer.
