Minecraft OptiFine Alternatives
Looking for Minecraft OptiFine alternatives usually starts the same way: OptiFine has not updated for your version, or it conflicts with a mod you want, and you discover the community moved on some time ago.
The replacement is not one mod but several, because OptiFine bundled six unrelated features into a single download. The good news is that the modern stack is faster and far more compatible. Here is the feature-by-feature mapping.
This assumes Java Edition and a current Minecraft version. If you are on an old version where OptiFine still works well and you run few other mods, staying put is perfectly reasonable.
Why OptiFine stopped being the default
OptiFine was genuinely excellent for a decade, and its decline is not about quality. It is about how it works.
It patches Minecraft in deep, closed-source ways that were designed before mod loaders standardised. That means it frequently conflicts with other mods, and mod authors cannot inspect or work around the conflicts because the source is not available.
It also updates slowly. A new Minecraft release can leave OptiFine users waiting weeks or months, while Fabric and its performance mods are usually ready within days.
And it does not publish on Modrinth, which is where an increasing share of the ecosystem now lives, so it is invisible to the tools most people use to find mods.

Sodium replaces the part that mattered most
The reason most people installed OptiFine was frame rate, and Sodium does that job better.
It rewrites Minecraft's chunk rendering to batch draw calls properly rather than submitting thousands of small ones. On typical hardware the result is roughly double the frame rate, and on older machines the difference can be larger.
It is open-source, actively developed, and updates quickly after Minecraft releases. It also fixes several long-standing visual glitches that most players assumed were simply how the game looked.
Install this first. If frame rate was your only reason for wanting OptiFine, you can stop here.
Iris covers shaders, and does it better
Shader support was OptiFine's other headline feature, and Iris now provides it while remaining compatible with Sodium.
That compatibility is the important part. Under OptiFine, shaders and performance were bundled and you accepted whatever rendering performance came with them. With Iris plus Sodium you keep the rendering improvements underneath the shader pass.
Iris supports the popular packs — Complementary, BSL, Sildur's and most others written for OptiFine's shader format.
A small number of very old shader packs use OptiFine-specific features Iris does not implement. In practice this affects few people, and the pack's own page usually says so.
The zoom key is the one people actually miss
Of OptiFine's smaller features, the zoom key generates by far the most complaints when it disappears. It is not a performance feature at all — it is a quality-of-life binding people become dependent on without noticing.
Zoomify is the most configurable replacement, with smooth zoom, adjustable levels and control over the transition. Ok Zoomer is simpler and lighter if you just want the key back.
Either is a small download with no dependencies beyond the loader. Install one, bind it, and the muscle memory returns immediately.
Connected textures and dynamic lighting
These two are resource-pack features rather than gameplay ones, and whether you need them depends entirely on the pack you use.
Continuity provides connected textures — glass panes joining seamlessly, bookshelves aligning — for packs that support it. It requires Sodium and is a straight replacement for OptiFine's implementation.
LambDynamicLights makes held light sources actually illuminate the world, which vanilla does not do. It is purely cosmetic and quite pleasant, particularly when exploring caves.
If your resource pack looked wrong after leaving OptiFine, one of these two is almost certainly what it wanted.
What the split stack costs you
It would be dishonest to present this as pure gain. The modern approach has one real disadvantage: it is six downloads instead of one.
That means six things to keep updated, six potential version mismatches after a Minecraft release, and a longer list to check when something breaks.
In exchange you get better performance, faster updates, open-source code, and compatibility with the wider mod ecosystem. For most people that is a clear win, but it is a trade rather than a free upgrade.

Installing the replacement stack
Install Fabric for your Minecraft version, then add the mods you need. Fabric API first, since nearly everything depends on it.

If you are choosing freely and performance is your priority, Fabric remains where these mods are developed first and where they are most thoroughly tested.
Can you still use OptiFine?
You can, and for a narrow set of circumstances it is still defensible.
If you run few or no other mods, want all six features, and are on a Minecraft version OptiFine supports, it works and it is one download.
There is also OptiFabric, a compatibility layer that runs OptiFine under Fabric. It conflicts with a great many mods and is not something to build a setup around, but it exists.
